This program intends to increase the awareness of the western students from developed countries like USA & European countries about the Indian social work scenario. ‘Understanding Social Realities in India’ is one of our educational programs which aims to orient the international students about various community related issues and the extensive work being done in this arena by various social organizations. The students will get the theoretical perspective which will be supplemented by field experience in different urban and rural social institutions. This four week program is open to all the graduate & undergraduate students who are interested in the subject.
Students will attend lectures & interactive sessions from experts who are actively working on specific social issues. This will enable the students to interact with people who are catalysts in social change & understand better about the process of change.
Students will visit different projects working on specific issues and observe its functioning. They will also get an opportunity to participate in the project activity. Students will be assigned tasks depending on their capacities & interest. They are expected to perform the task assigned to the fullest & are expected to give detailed project report. Following are the possible sights of rotation for the students who enroll for this course: Yusuf Meherali Centre: It is situated at Tara, in Raigad district. It works for the betterment in the life of local people & hence, is involved in number of social, medical &agricultural activites. It takes initiative for encouraging rural industries and work with the tribals. Since the early nineties it is actively engaged in presenting to the nation a replicable model of rural development. This model is based on its definiton of rural development as micro-watershed development plus organic farming, including vermiculture, and vermi compost plus non-conventional energy plus village industries and marketing their products in urban and semi-urban areas, in addition to the surrounding villages. Vidhayak sansad: It is a nongovernmental organization working with the tribal in the rural area of vasai. It started its work by taking up the issue of the bonded laborers which was prevalent in that area. The project has successfully worked against the injustice that was taking place in their area & has also worked for the advocacy of the issue. Aangan : The project started in the year 2002, in collaboration with women & Children welfare Department. The project serves as the monitoring body for the state run remand homes, children homes & observation homes. Project has come up with certain monitoring tools on the basis of which they would do the ranking of the facilities available at these homes & will give further recommendations. They have also implemented the concept of spiral garden in four of the homes. The project has started facilities like counseling in various homes.

Nirman : It is a non-governmental organization which started initially as a field project of College of Social Work, Nirmala Niketan. It has been registered in the year 2003. The project works with the migrant workers, especially with construction workers. Project functions at the number of construction sights in Mumbai & New Bombay. The project undertakes various activities focusing on health & education of these workers & their families. It has initiated work on HIV/AIDS. It conducts number of capacity building training like skill development training.
