GUJARAT TOURS - BIRTH PLACE OF THE MESSIAH OF
NON-VIOLENCE
Gujarat
is situated in the west coast of India. The name 'Gujarat' is said
to have been derived from the Prakrit Gujjar Ratta or Gujjar Rashtra
- the land of Gujjars - a tribe that entered India with the Huns
in ancient time and wandering through Punjab and Rajasthan, settled
in western India.
Gujarat
had a great civilization even before the arrival of the Aryans.
It had trade links with ancient civilizations of Sumer, Babylon,
Assyria and Egypt. The Port of Lothal which has been excavated recently
has been identified as an important centre of the 4500 years old
Aryan civilization.
From
a tourist point of view, Gujarat is an attractive destination, teeming
with imposing buildings, monuments,
historical sis, mosques and temples.
Somnath
Temple:
Situated
79 kms from Junagadh and 25 kms. from Chorwad, is the legendary
shore temple of Somnath, one of the twelve most sacred Shiva shrines
in India. Legend has it that the Somnath Temple was originally built
out of gold by Somraj, the moon god. Then, it was rebuilt by Ravana
in silver and then again by Krishna in wood and yet again by King
Bhimdev Solanki in stone in the 10th century. The temple was so
rich that it had over 300 musicians, 500 dancing girls and even
300 barbers - just to shave the heads of pilgrims!
Dwarkanath
Temple:
The exterior of the temple is supported by 60 columns and is crowned
by a soaring, elaborately carved spire. On Janmashtami day (birthday
of Lord Krishna) thousands of devotees throng this temple from all
around the world. Adi Shankara the renowned reformer saint also
established the Sharda Peeth - one of the four seats in the country
propagating Hinduism.

river Sabarmati, 7 kms. north of the city, Mahatma Gandhi set up
a simple retreat in 1915. This was his first Satyagraha Ashram and
for many it was the nerve centre of India's freedom movement. Hridaya
Kunj, the cottage where he lived is preserved as it was in the Mahatma's
lifetime. The Gandhi Ashram has a memorial centre,
library and a sound and light spectacle to offer its visitors. Location
Ahmedabad.
Girnar:
The
Girnar mountain is in Junagadh and is 327 kms. from Ahmedabad. Girnar
is one of the two hills most sacred to the Jain community of India.
It rises to a height of more than 600 meters, a climb marked by
10,000 stone-steps, built and maintained from the proceeds of a
lottery.Five peaks, crowned
by sixteen carved and sculptured marble shrines adorn this famous
hilltop temple city.

MADHYA
PRADESH TOURISM - THE HEART OF INDIA
 The
creators of Khajuraho claimed descent from the moon.. The
temples that reveals human passions, and in doing so bring
about a realization of the emptiness of human desire. Chandravarman
began the construction of the first of the temples, successive
rulers added to the fast growing complex |
Jabalpur
Pachmarhi is Madhya Pradesh's most verdant jewel, a place
where nature has found exquisite expression in myriad enchanting
ways.Green shades embrace the mountains, and everywhere is heard
the gentle murmur of flowing water. Bridle paths lead into tranquil
forest glades, groves of wild bamboo and jamun, dense sal forests
and delicate bamboo thickets.
Gwalior
Steeped in the splendour of its past, the ancient capital of Gwalior
has yet made a successful transition into a modern Indian city,
vibrant and bustling. Gwalior's tradition as a royal capital continued
until the formation of present day India, with the Scindias having
their dynastic seat here. The magnificent mementoes of a glorious
past have been preserved with care, giving Gwalior an appeal unique
and timeless.
Kanha's
sal and bamboo forests, rolling grasslands and meandering streams
stretch over 940 sq km in dramatic natural splendour which form the
core of th
e
Kanha Tiger Reserve created in 1974 under Project Tiger. The park
is the only habitat of the rare hardground Barasingha (Cervus Duvaceli
Branderi).
Bandhavgarh
This is a small National Park; compact, yet full of game. The density
of the Tiger population at Bandhavgarh is the highest known in India.
This
is also White Tiger country. These have been found in the old state
of Rewa for many years. The last known was captured by Maharajah Martand
Singh in 1951. This White Tiger, Mohun, is now stuffed and on display
in the palace of the Maharajahs of Rewa.
Bhopal capital of Madhya Pradesh
combines scenic beauty, historicity and modern urban planning. It
is situated on the site of an 11th century city, Bhojapal, founded
by Raja Bhoja.
Bhopal
today presents a multi-faceted profile; the old city with its teeming
market places and fine old mosques and palaces still bear the aristocratic
imprint of its former rulers; among them the succession of powerful
Begums who ruled Bhopal from 1819 to 1926. Equally impressive is
the new city with its verdant, exquisitely laid out parks and gardens,
broad avenues and streamlined modern edifices.
